Unfortunately, getting a meal for cheap in New York also needs to factor in transportation. If the cheap place isn't close by, a subway ride there and back will tack on $4 per person.

As a liberal fan of an NL team I am not in favor of the DH, and thus shamed by my party. I also think it's an incredibly simplistic argument to compare the DH rule to welfare as an explanation for this. 1) The analogy doesn't seem to hold up in my mind, and 2) just because some people like puppies and chocolate does not mean there is a correlation between the two.
